He became known as a result of the shorts: El ángel de mármol [The marble angel] and Jardines deshabitados [Uninhabited Gardens] and has won several awards. His first feature-length film Frío sol de invierno [The cold winter sun] competed in the New Directors section of the 2004 International Cinema Festival of San Sebastián, and also carried off further awards after it was premiered, including the Goya 2005 for the Best New Director.
