Although he began to play the accordion at five, his musical career began in 1989, in the strictest sense, when he recorded his first record Ja, ja, intended for children. In 1990 he founded the pop-jazz group called Les Mecaniciens, with whom he released three albums. The group split in 1993 but Jabier then began his career as a singer-songwriter, and his music had touches of rock, pop and jazz. In 1996, in parallel to his work as a singer-songwriter, he set up the group Joxe Ripiau with his brother Iñigo and Sergio Ordóñez, with whom he released four records until they split up in 2000. Throughout his solo career he has released a total of nine works, many of then critically acclaimed.
His literary career started in the early 1990s, founding the literary group Emak Bakia along with Bernardo Atxaga, Ruper Ordorika, Jose Mari Iturralde….
As a writer, Jabier has published six children’s books. Sei lagun, sei sekretu (1994) Gabon Guanito (1995) Sebas leihotik begira (2001) Zubi misteriotsuan (2001) Asteburu bat tren zaharrean (2004) and Amapola oporretan (2006). He has also published two books of short stories for adults: Bizitza pusketak (1996) and Laura kanpoan da (1999). Over this time he has also written many articles in different media.
